Gerry Lee Sims
Gerry Lee Sims passed away July 23, 2018 after a brief but determined battle with cancer. He was born December 16, 1957 in Springfield, OH to William C. Sims & Marjorie M. (McGinnis) Sims. He married his best friend and love of his life for nearly 26 years, Lisa, on September 5, 1992. Gerry was a factory worker for much of his life, dedicating his hard work to taking care of and providing for his family. He was the first of his siblings to receive a college degree, graduating with his bachelor’s in graphic design in 2012 from Saginaw Valley State University. Known for his creative and playful side, Gerry greatly enjoyed photography, painting, and drawing, often finding just the right moment to perfectly capture a candid photo or a cherished moment between friends and family. He also loved the pursuit of knowledge and learning about history. Gerry could often be found with a book in his hands, eager to absorb the information in the book’s pages. He also had a fondness for working on cars, and loved attending car shows whenever one could be found. He loved to volunteer with his family, giving back to the community by regularly volunteering with the Broadway Theatre, or any band, choir, or 4H event in which his children were participating. Gerry loved his family dearly, and greatly enjoyed spending time with them, offering sage advice, or making them laugh with his offbeat sense of humor and infectious laughter. He made sarcasm the first spoken language and sense of humor in his family’s home. While his first musical love was oldie’s rock, Gerry loved attending his children’s choir and band concerts. He was very proud of them and their accomplishments. He was also very proud of his beautiful wife and everything she could do. Gerry could fill a room with his presence, deep booming voice, or his laughter. He was accepting of everyone, and enjoyed the thoughtful conversations he had with his friends. Gerry always had a kind word or piece of well thought out advice for someone in need. He also had a way of lightening the mood, raising the spirits of those around him with a well-timed joke that would evoke laughter and make everything seem just a little better and a little brighter. His faith in God sustained him through his battle with cancer, and allowed him to look forward to meeting his savior in Heaven. This belief also gave him the courage to not sweat the small stuff and enjoy life. Gerry is survived by his wife Lisa Sims of Shepherd, children Samantha and Kyle, brother Ronald (Peggie) Sims, sisters Nancy Hayes and Anita Sims, aunt Francis Davis, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, guardians Phyllis, Dottie, and Dale McGinnis, and in-laws William and Matilda Riggs. Memorial Service to be held August 18, 2018 at 1pm at the Central Michigan Christian Church, 3433 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI.
